| This program brings
together young people from New Jersey’s urban schools
and others to discuss a range of issues affecting the urban
environment. The panel consists of students attending high
schools in urban areas in northern (Newark) and southern
(Neptune) New Jersey, the principal and former science teacher
at Neptune High School, and an expert from a non-profit
organization focused on global energy efficiency and the
environment.
Research confirms that students learn best in an environment
that is healthy, primarily uses natural lighting, is clean,
and in good repair. In this program, students share their
thoughts and feelings on attending schools that are either
in a state of disrepair or are currently undergoing renovations
and what they are doing to make their worlds more promising
and bright. The adult participants speak to the administrative
and technical challenges facing these major renovation projects.
The panel discuss what educators are doing to overcome environmental
obstacles unique to the urban setting to promote a healthy
productive learning atmosphere and look at ways new school
buildings or renovations of older buildings enhance the
internal and external environment and promote academic success
in the urban environment. Students talk about the aesthetics
of their indoor and outdoor school environment including
not only how it looks but how it makes them feel and the
effect it has on their ability to learn.
