Battling Boomeritis
Show #2134 & #2135
Original Airdate: Pt 1 - 1/12/08 & Pt 2 - 1/19/08

Description

As the Baby Boom generation moved into their 40s and 50s, the healthcare community reported an explosion of orthopedic problems including bone and joint aches, pains, injuries, and ailments now referred to as “boomeritis.”  This two-part Families in Focus special explores the physical and emotional issues facing “boomers.” Menopause, weight management, sleep disturbances, stroke, heart disease, diabetes, depression, all these ailments and more are affecting the “Pepsi Generation.”

Marketing to this generation focused on the importance of maintaining one’s youth and promoted products and services designed to retain one’s youthful appearance and outlook. The panel considers whether this has contributed to creating a generation that fears “getting old.” We explore the emotional challenges faced by families who find themselves in a seemingly never-ending struggle between the demands of caring for both their children and elderly parents. Coping strategies for dealing with stress, guilt, anger, and emotional isolation are examined. Additionally, the panel considers ways that boomers can stay fit and healthy, as well as emphasize the need to seek medical attention on a regular basis throughout the life span.  The first half will focuses more on health related and orthopedic issues and the second half examines social and personal issues like being sandwiched between caring for aging parents while caring for children.

Tape Piece - Part one of this two part Families in Focus special begins with a mini-documentary produced by Joanna Caplan, which follows boomer Linda Lohsen, RN who discusses her orthopedic injury.  We also talk with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Andrew Brief who explains the unique emotional and physical challenges boomers face.
