Many women believe that heart disease is something that only men need to worry about. Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States. The panel considers risk factors and warning signs for heart disease in women, and how these risks can be drastically reduced by making lifestyle changes such as following a heart healthy diet, obtaining regular exercise, and maintaining an appropriate weight. Women and men are affected by heart disease in different ways, and they approach treatment differently as well. Women often present with heart disease at a more advanced stage because the needs of their children and/or significant other are considered of paramount importance. This two-part special is designed to raise women's awareness of their risks for heart disease and address the following issues: myths about women and heart disease; why women should learn about symptoms of heart disease; when to go to a cardiologist; risk factors, warning signs, treatment and prevention options, tips for a healthy heart, and the different experiences women have from men during a heart attack.
Tape Piece - The program begins with a mini-documentary produced by Dianne Doctor designed to raise awareness of heart disease among women. We talked with patient Kathy Wolfl, Holy Name cardiologist Dr. Van Dyck-Acquah, Dr. Jacqueline Brunetti who is the Director of Radiology and Nancy Ellson, RN Coordinator Center for Healthy Living.
