On this installment of Families in Focus, Emmy Award-winning
anchor Steve Adubato looks at sportsmanship like behavior not only in
children, but their parents as well.
The
last year's tragedy in connection with a child's hockey
game in Massachusetts, among other incidents, underscores
the problem of adult violence and misconduct at sporting
events. But despite heightened awareness of sports violence,
the number of abusive and negative incidents has risen sharply
in the last five years among all age groups and all sports.
This one-hour program begins with a tape piece that features
Saint Barnabas Health System's Rediscovering Youth Sportsmanship
program, which provides training, support and step-by-step
guidelines to help adults keep sports safe for kids. The
program was developed by behavioral health specialists at
Saint Barnabas to help parents become positively involved
in sports and to help model for their children sportsmanlike
behavior. The studio discussion that follows features parents,
young people, coaches and others who are working to keep
sports fun and safe for children.
