This half-hour segment focuses on New Brunswick as a genuine “success story” in terms of recent revitalization efforts that have benefited both residents and local business along the entire socioeconomic spectrum. It looks at New Brunswick at the rebirth of its downtown area, along with the creation of a range of rental properties, from low income to luxury. The program considers recent improvements to George Street and the efforts to bridge Rutgers University with the community, as well as the increase in entertainment options, which have helped make New Brunswick a destination spot for nightlife. Further, panelists examine the recent increase in jobs and job training for local residents, New Brunswick has always been a destination spot for new immigrants to this part of the country. In the past, New Brunswick had a primarily African American population with a Hungarian segment too; however, today’s immigrants are primarily from Mexico and Central and South America. Immigration and documentation requirements often create challenges for these residents to obtain much needed social services. New Brunswick is considered is a national model for the way it coordinates its social services for the entire community. All of the panelists have a long history with the city of New Brunswick.
Tape Piece: The program begins with a mini-documentary produced by Joanna Caplan, that provides an overview of the transformation of New Brunswick citing those who were instrumental in the revitalization efforts.
