| Ovarian cancer is cancer that starts in the ovaries. The ovaries are the female reproductive organs that produce eggs. One in every 60 women develops ovarian cancer. It is the fourth deadliest cancer among women because it is often diagnosed late, when treatment is more difficult or less successful. This program focuses on risk factors, symptoms, the need for psycho-social support for the individual and family, as well as the importance of prevention programs like the Maureen Fund, which provides ovarian cancer screening and prevention services for high-risk women. Ovarian cancer is often referred to as "the silent killer," and with good reason. More than 20,000 women are diagnosed annually, but because its early symptoms are often subtle and easily confused with other diseases, ovarian cancer often remains undetected and untreated until it has reached an advanced stage.
