| This
is the second half of a two-part Caucus: New Jersey special
examining whether or not we are prepared to deal with Avian
Influenza pandemic. Avian (or bird) Influenza is caused
by influenza viruses that occur naturally among wild birds.
The currently circulating H5N1 strain is deadly to domestic
fowl (i.e., chicken, turkeys) and can be transmitted from
birds to humans. At the time of this production, there is
no human immunity and no vaccine is available. The panel
examines the impact of a widespread pandemic including the
effect on the healthcare delivery system, the extent to
which state and federal government would function, infrastructure
and communication and collaboration strategies, as well
as the social changes that would occur. Further, the panel
critically discusses and evaluates the current draft of
the state plan.
