| In the US, women outlive men by 5.3 years on average. While long life is an advantage, women tend to spend their older years living alone, faced with health and financial concerns that they didn’t anticipate. Addressing these concerns falls under the mission of the International Longevity Center, a non-profit research, policy and education organization founded by gerontologist and Pulitzer Prize winner Robert N. Butler, M.D. Among Dr. Butler’s philosophies is that women should be empowered to take control of this time of their lives by participating in “longevity support groups.” In this half-hour edition of “Informed Choices,” we will bring Dr. Butler together with three women to discuss such issues as staying strong while growing old, financial longevity, mental health issues, the need for long-term care and the need for peer support.
