| The
cost of health insurance is one of the biggest challenges
facing New Jersey businesses. Skyrocketing costs hurt employers’
ability to compete in the world economy and create new jobs.
Achieving affordable, quality healthcare coverage concerns
everyone, since costs are out of control for both employers
and employees. According to the 2005 Health Benefits Survey
conducted by the New Jersey Business & Industry Association
(NJBIA), the average cost of employee health coverage soared
by 11 percent in 2004, forcing many small companies to drop
health coverage. While a growing number of employers have
been shifting more costs to their employees and offering
less comprehensive coverage, these actions are not expected
to slow the rate of increase. In this program, we will explore
the many factors that play a role in this trend, including
the growing number of uninsured, technological advances
and litigation, among others. The program will also feature
a discussion of possible solutions including the promotion
of wellness, prevention and disease management programs,
as well as the adoption of Consumer-Directed Health Care
Plans or Association Health Plans (AHPs).
