Program

New Frontiers in Medical Research

Description

Groundbreaking research is taking place in the Garden State that offers hope to millions suffering from debilitating conditions such as spinal cord injury, cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, and HIV/AIDS. A panel of research scientists from academia, the public sector and the biotech industry will reveal breakthroughs that place us closer to finding cures and potentially isolating genes that may cause many of these diseases. The role heredity plays in disease, and the interplay between environment and genetic propensity will be explored. Additionally, this half-hour program will examine the burgeoning field of personalized medicine in which pharmaceuticals are tailored to address an individual’s genetic make-up. New developments in the behavioral/addictive sciences reveal that an individual’s biological/molecular basis affects behaviors. The development of 3-D data bases promise to detect and regulate the spread of disease will be considered, along with the role of biopharmaceutical companies.
