Show #2229
Original Airdate: 3/21/09

Tape Date: February 2009

Description

Cancer remains one of the most formidable challenges of our generation and of New Jersey residents. Traditionally, cancer therapy has come in three forms surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, a fourth modality, biological therapy, has been evolving, and includes cancer vaccines, anticancer antibodies, and gene therapy. These are very much the interests and goals of the Garden State Cancer Center. On this program, we examine the efforts of The Garden State Cancer Center, which fosters research for new technologies in diagnosis, detection and treatment of cancer, as well as the advancement biological approaches to the detection and treatment of cancer.  Due to lack of funds, the Garden State Cancer Center no longer treats patients at their clinic but because they partner with Cancer Centers in the region and throughout the world, they are bringing their therapies not only to New Jersey patients but to people around the world.  We’ll talk with former New Jersey Governor Brendan Byrne and his wife Ruthi Byrne, who are strong advocates for the center, and Dr. David Goldenberg its president about the importance of the center, how it is helping New Jersey patients and patients world-wide.  We will also talk about the need for funding and Dr. Goldenberg will discuss the groundbreaking research the center is doing which is bringing hope to patients and their families.
