This
half-hour special looks at the importance of literacy education
not only among children in our state and the nation but
their parents as well. The program begins with a mini-documentary
segment that spotlights the work of the Jersey City chapter
of Literacy Volunteers of America-New Jersey and adult literacy
student Consuelo McPherson, an immigrant from Belize who
is extremely determined to read children’s stories
to her 3 1/2-year-old son. Thanks to literacy tutoring,
she has passed her drivers test and best of all, her next
goal is to pass her citizenship test. The studio discussion
features leaders in our state’s fight for literacy
including a volunteer literacy tutor and an individual whose
life was changed as a result of literacy training.
